My 35th barn quilt!  This 2 x 2 beauty is called Hunter Star.  It is fun how my customers come up with new unique designs and color combinations! You make my job so fun!!

This is the second time and tide barn quilt I have made.  This customer found the first one on my blog and decided it was exactly what she wanted!  It is a great design!

Stellie

The people that ordered this barn quilt knew they wanted "John Deere" green, white, yellow and red in their barn quilt.  I helped them find a design with plenty of space for the letter "S" in the middle.

Nine Patch Star

This 4 x 4 barn quilt is called the nine patch star.  This is perfect for any Iowa Hawkeye fan!

Sac County Barn Quilts

If you have driven through Sac County you probably have noticed all of their beautiful barn quilts. This is a great book that was published in 2007. It has all of their barn quilts along with a great history of the barns.  It was driving through Sac County that inspired me to make my first barn quilt.  Hats off to Sac County for getting the barn quilt movement started in western Iowa!

Octagon Star

This is a 2 x 2 barn quilt called Octagon Star.  This would be perfect for an Iowa State Cyclone fan!

Star Puzzle

This is a 4 x 4 barn quilt made with pink, burgundy and white.  The owner is this barn quilt has burgundy trim on their house.  This will be hung on their garage.

Sunflower

This pattern is called Sunflower.  The owners of this 6 x 6 barn quilt have a cream colored house with burgundy trim.  This should look very nice on their barn.

Checkerboard

This is a 8 x 8 barn quilt that looks like a checkerboard.  This barn quilt will be displayed on a beautiful white barn with a red roof.  It should look beautiful!

This is a 2 x 2 barn quilt that would be perfect for a Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Barn Quilts of Pender (Ne)

I recently drove over to Pender, Nebraska to look at their barn quilts.  It was amazing!  They have over 200 barn quilts with almost 150 within the town!
Pender has a population of around 1100, so that is a lot of barn quilts.  Most of the barn quilts were mounted on posts in people's front yards.  All of the barn quilts have a "quilts of Pender 125" mounted next to them as you can see in this picture.  This sign also has the name of the quilt block.  This one is called Thistle Bloom and is found in front of a florist shop.   All of these barn quilts were done in honor of Pender's 125th celebration this summer.  If you are looking for a fun Sunday afternoon drive, Pender is the place to go!

These are three 2 x2 barn quilts that I completed this summer.  I love the variety that you can get with the designs and colors. Each barn quilt is unique and individual.

This is my barn quilt with a flower bed full of black-eyed susans.  The gold of the flowers brings out the gold in the barn quilt.



La Moyne Star 4

This block is called LaMoyne Star 4.  It is a variation of the LaMoyne Star.  It is a 2 x 2 block that says, " GO CYCLONES!"

Time & Tide

This quilt pattern is called time and tide.  I think the yellow makes the star look like it is shining. The star is done in two tones of red.

Twirling Star

This is a 8 x 8 quilt block called twirling star.  It is very dramatic with the black in the background.

State Fair Block at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds

This is the State Fair block that is mounted on the south end of the beef barn at the Woodbury County Fair in Moville, Iowa.  The colors remind me of the purple, blue and red ribbons that are awarded at the fair.  I hope everyone enjoys seeing it at the fair this year!

Sadler Star

This is the same design as I have on my building. This is a 2 x 2 block.  I called it Sadler Star because I am not sure of the "offical name", but I think Sadler Star is fitting! I made a fabric quilt with this pattern in red and greens.

State Fair

This block is called State Fair.  The colors are gold, red , dark green and purple.  I like how the gold pops out.

Cleo's Castle in the Air

This block is called Cleo's Castle in the Air. What looks like dark blue, is really purple. Very colorful!

Bear Paw

This is a 2 x 2 barn quilt.  The purchaser of this barn quilt is going to put it on their home which is painted green and brown.  It should look really nice!

Wild Goose

This is another 4th of July theme.  The white "geese" really look like they are flying.

La Moyne Star

This is done in patriotic colors. It is so appropriate with the 4th of July right around the corner.

Roadside Barn Quilt Display

This is the other side of my roadside barn quilt.  I put a 2 x 2 block on each side of a post.  You can see my 8 x 8 barn quilt on the building in the background.

Some people have told me that they can't have a "barn quilt" because they don't have a barn.  This is what we did over the weekend to show what can be done with a "barn quilt".  A barn quilt doesn't have to be on a barn, it can be put on a post anywhere outdoors or on the side of any outdoor structure.  I think of it as bringing the beauty of quilts to the great outdoors.

Quilt Block Ideas

A lot of people ask me how I come up the quilt blocks.  I have been quilting for almost 3o years, so I have made a lot of quilts and wallhangings.  I have also collected a lot of books and magazines about quilting.  So, the quilt blocks are all around me!  Of course, some work better as barn quilts than other, so I have revisited those books and magazines, looking for quilts blocks that would work best for a barn quilt.

Double Pinwheel

This is the second double pinwheel. It is a 2 x 2 block.

This pattern is called double pinwheel. It is a 2 x 2 block. I made 2 blocks with the same pattern, but with the colors in different places.

This is my finished 2 x 2 friendship star. This is my first block with purple! I think the red border really sets it off.

This is my finished 2 x 2 block called farmer's daughter. I really like the green. It looks like four tulips to me, do you see them?

This is my friend Jeannie's 2 x 2 block. I just added the green and it really made it come alive. The green is so bright and cheerful!

This is the second double windmill block. This is a 2 x 2 block.

The name of this block is double pinwheel. I am doing 2 of this same pattern at the same time, placing the colors in different locations. It is interesting to see how the placement of the color changes the look of the block. This is a 2 x 2 block.

This is the finished 2 x 2 block that is called the Friendship Star. This barn quilt was donated to the Woodbury County Fair and sold at the auction.

The second color is green. It looks like Christmas now, but the next two colors are blue and yellow.

This is a new barn quilt I am making. I started with the red, it is the color that really draw your eye to the block.
